Another highway leads south from the town,
headed for the Western Desert and the oases of
Siwa and Bahariya. During
World War II, the British Army's Baggush Box was located to
the east. During this period, Marsa Matrouh was the terminus
for a single-track railway which passed through El Alamein.
Marsa Matruh's main function nowadays is to serve as a getaway
resort for Cairenes eager to flee the capital in the
sweltering summer months.
NOTEWORTHY SITES

EL-OBYED BEACH 20 km west of Mersa Matrouh,
accessible by car.

TEMPLES OF RAMSES II 10 km east of Marsa
Mtrouh.

CLEOPATRAS BATH carved out of rock,
about 50 m off shore, 7 km west of Marsa Matrouh. It can be
reached by motorboat, sailing boat, car or even by foot.

ROMMELS CAVE A rock-hewn cave where the German
Commander retired to draw up his military plans.

AGUIBA (WONDEROUS) A lovely beach, 28 km west
of Marsa Matrouh: natural caves and wonderous sceneries, hence
its name"Aguiba".

RAS EL-HEKMA Another quiet and charming beach,
about 85 km east of Mersa Matrouh.

SIWA OASIS About 300 km South of Mersa Matrouh.
One can get there by car from Mersa Matrouh.
